Republican National Convention for Columbus in 2016 is a No Go

In Columbus, Commercial, net lease, nnn, Retail

It was announced that of Phoenix and Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dallas, Denver, Kansas City and Las Vegas, Columbus and Phoenix were eliminated on the first round as the host city for the Republican National Convention for 2016.

Given that Ohio is always pivotal in winning the presidency and that Columbus is one of the very few success stories in the Midwest, something is wrong.  In my opinion, this is a big loss.

I still think that the Greater Columbus Convention Center is one of our big weaknesses.  Not only does it have a big case of the uglies, but not nearly enough full-service hotel rooms within walking distance of the convention center.  We’ve always had trouble attracting big national conventions and this must be fixed.  Too much exposure to Columbus that we’re missing out on.

I think another issue is the lack of direct flights in and out of Columbus although the city is working hard on that as the same collapses in Cincinnati and Cleveland.   Plus, maybe light rail direct from the airport to downtown would also help.

We have Nationwide Arena across from the convention center which is great, but I think we need another 1,200 – 1,500 full-service hotel rooms, and frankly some more nation credit, national brand, net leased retail in the area in addition to the boutique retail that we already have in the Short North.
