This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise as this has been in the works for a while. Califonia passed the nation’s first mandatory green-building code today that requires new buildings to cut water use by 20 percent, divert half of the construction waste away from landfills and include low-pollution building materials beginning in 2011. This is aimed to help California reach the state’s goal of 33 percent renewable energy sources by 2020.
